Supervised Practical Training Related to Autism (academic and workplace)

1. Working directly with children with autism

Practicum/Internship

Employment/Practice-Related

I received 6 months of close supervision from Tracy Kandborg and Leslie Jones when I started working directly with children with Autism. In my current practice, I receive supervision and mentorship from Carmen Black. Every consultant at CBI Consultants can turn to another consultant to receive mentorship in a specific strategy.

Professional Experience:

I have worked with families who have a child with Autism for 13 years. I have worked with children as young as 3 years of age (some of whom had only been diagnosed 2 months earlier) and adults in their late 40's. I have supported children who are non-verbal and extremely non-responsive to their environment and, at the opposite end of the spectrum, children/adolescents who can speak, read, and write fluently.

I have supported one First Nations Family and was involved in training several First Nations Agencies on the Wraparound Process.  The Wraparound Process is an approach that puts the child and the child’s family at the centre of the support plan.  Professionals listen to the child’s and family’s hopes, dreams, and visions.  These ideas drive the support plan, as does the family’s needs (as they express them).  The Wraparound Process also uses careful data collection and analysis to ensure the support plan is achieving the child’s and family’s hopes, dreams, and visions.

Snapshot of Your Philosophy and Approach to Working with Individuals and Families with Autism

CBI's philosophy and approach for the treatment of Autism is first and foremost person-centred. We believe that every person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder is an individual first. We strive to get to know the individual as comprehensively as possible with a strong and purposeful emphasis on the person's strengths, preferences, vision for his/her life, communication style, learning style, and sensory profile (i.e., personal profile). We also complete a thorough functional assessment of any challenging behaviour the child may have.

CBI uses the Lifestyle Development Process to blend information from the child's personal profile and the functional assessment to create individualized support plans. After the assessment is complete, CBI uses a collaborative and educative consultation process to teach long-term team members (e.g., speech language therapists, occupational therapists) who are also supporting the child and family how to implement the support plan strategies. As the team masters the strategies, CBI begins to slowly withdraw our services to the point that the team can carry on the support plan independently.

Professional Development Activities:

  • May-June, 2006 (2-day workshop with Dr. Paul Wehman on supported employment), Burnaby.
  • October, 2005 (2 day workshop with Carol Gray and Dr. Tony Attwood on social skills and emotional
    regulation). Richmond.
  • July 2004 (various workshops at a 5 day conference of the Autism Society of America), Seattle, Washington.
