Important Information for parents

A professional who is a Registered Autism Service Provider has stated that he or she meets the minimum requirements for inclusion on the RASP registry as set out in the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) Application Form

Please note: Parents who wish to use funding they have received under the Ministry’s Autism Funding for Children under Six Program must use behaviour consultants and other professionals who are on the RASP list.

ACT does not endorse the expertise of service providers on the RASP list, nor do we take responsibility or guarantee the quality of service they provide. We are committed to working with MCFD and the professional community to standardize program requirements and ensure they reflect developments internationally in the field of autism treatment. See also the following links: A Note of Caution for Parents, Addressing Concerns: A Note of Caution for Behavioural Consultants and Grandfathered List.

Higher Standards for Professionals Joining the RASP
ACT’s goal is for the RASP to be a transparent tool for families seeking appropriately trained and experienced service providers. Since acquiring the RASP, we have taken a number of steps towards realizing that goal, including extensive revisions to update individual entries (e.g., adding details about and spelling out academic degrees rather than using initials), and reorganizing the list into geographic regions. Other initiatives are described below.

Revised Application Form
In August 2006, MCFD issued a new application form for professionals who wish to be on the RASP list. The clarity provided by this new document will make it easier for ACT to administer the program in the interests of children with ASD. The form can be viewed at www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/autism/pdf/CF0901FILL_AUG06.pdf

On-Line Profile Initiative
In order to help families get a better sense of the varying levels of qualifications and experience among behaviour consultants on the RASP, we have launched an on-line profile initiative. The profiles are detailed overviews of a professional’s skills and experience in ASD treatment. We have asked all behaviour consultants who are on or who plan to apply to the RASP to submit a profile. This year (2007) we will be extending the initiative to speech-language pathologists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists.

To view profiles of service providers that are now available on line, go to (Fraser or Vancouver Coastal or Interior Regions links), scroll down the list of consultants on this page until you see (view profile) beside an individual’s name. Then click on the link.

We strongly encourage parents to carefully review the qualifications and ask questions of professionals on the RASP whom they may wish to hire. For additional assistance with choosing a service provider, we recommend that you also read Selecting a Professional -"Tips for Parents" and Important Information for Parents . You may also call the ACT office and one of our information officers will be pleased to help you.

The "Grandfathered" List
In May, 2006 ACT contacted all behaviour consultants on the RASP and asked them to send updated information about their qualifications. We made this request because some consultants had provided little supporting information when they initially applied to the predecessor of the RASP (the Qualified Service Provider List) when it was managed by another agency. Those consultants who failed to provide requested information by the stated deadline were placed on a Grandfathered list. A “Grandfathered” consultant is someone who is part of the RASP registry because he or she was on the previous list of service providers (QSP) that we inherited, but would not qualify for the RASP if they were to apply today. For more information about the grandfathered list please visit www.actbc.ca/registry_of_service_providers/information_for_parents/grandfathered.html
